Slow Night

Not around the world, but certainly in my living room. Ya know, bought a new Swiffer, and wondered at its ability to attract dust-bunnies... that kind of night.

So maybe I'll rent Passion of the Christ.

Hey, never saw it; no time like the present, right?

The latest on Mel Gibson took me back to the time of that movie's release. Oh goody, the churches had fodder. Most instilled into their congregations the sheer necessity of viewing this film.

My church included.

However...My church also supports a missionary over in the Middle East somewhere. A Jewish missionary.

He visited during heat of the hype, spoke to the congregation, and funny thing... I don't think he liked the movie. "It wasn't the fault of Jews!" he shouted, "It was the fault of sinners! All of us!"

Yeah. And? This is what I was thinking. I know that. Duh. But I hadn't watched the movie. Nor had I considered the sensitivity that is Jewish guilt.

Regardless, I found his response surprising. Well, until I saw the response multiply all over the web. Still...twas odd I thought.

Now? Now that I hear about this transcript? I'm thinking maybe this fella saw something that most church leaders did not. Otherwise, I don't think they would have insisted that we must see the film!!!

Me? I skipped it because I have a serious problem viewing human torture. Like...serious. The five seconds I saw of Reservoir Dogs (eight years ago) is still haunting me.

So I guess I will have to rely upon the unbiased opinions of others, because now I wonder more than ever: How was that movie?

I don't think I'm "unbiased" being an atheist, but it was a very graphic representation of the story, that's for sure. If you didn't like Reservoir Dogs, I think you probably should avoid P of the C.

I didn't care for it. Mostly because I felt there were inconsistancies that annoyed the crap out of me. It was graphic. So graphic I was sickened that parents felt their pre-teens needed to see it.

I view it as just a movie and not a true representation of reality, if that word can even be used in regards to Gibson.

Of course I don't understand the thought process of the churches in this country that denounce all things Harry Potter and promote all things Lord of the Rings and Narnia.

Posted by: Symph at August 2, 2006 07:44 PM

I passed on "The Passion" and don't like Mel Gibson...he acts like a tweeker...now we know it's booze and .....???

Mel making comments about Jews didn't really bother me. My Jewish friends and I have talked so much crap about him and the Catholic church that he's entitled to say what he wants. Most of us Jews don't really care what Mel Gibson, the actor, director and religious fanatic thinks...mostly because he's an American citizen. If he was from another country...the hair on the back of my neck would be standing up!!!

Please post what you think of the movie...my Christian friends loved it.

BTW, I'm glad to hear you go to church...I think it such an important part of one's life to have a solid religious base...Yes, I do fit right in with the Blairsvillians...as Baptist as they are!

Posted by: vicki at August 2, 2006 09:14 PM

I preferred The Last Temptation of Christ, mainly because it showed Jesus as a man/God who did indeed reject temptation to "do the right thing" as it might be put.

The sado-masochism of the "passion" that many denominations focus upon is rather medival, narrow-minded, and refuses to understand the true nature of sacrifice in my mind.

But, then again, that is my heathen, rational mind poking in with an opinion.

Posted by: Jack at August 2, 2006 09:45 PM

...and I attend services, but am a natural contrarian. Admittedly, the organized religion at this point is for the benefit of Priss.

RE Mel, I thought he was an Aussie... No?

Posted by: Key at August 3, 2006 06:18 PM

Well, damn, Mel is an Aussie...came here in '68.

Still don't care what he said...being a Catholic with substance abuse issues is still worse than being a Jew...heh heh

I told you I'm not nice!

Posted by: vicki at August 4, 2006 10:51 AM

Update: Drudge Report today...Mel's bodyguard is an Israeli Jew!

Posted by: vicki at August 4, 2006 11:33 AM

Just keep in mind P of C is done as Gibson saw Cruxification. From what I've read, that's not saying much. I never saw it, figuring I didn't need to because I know whence my faith comes. Reservoir Dogs on my list to see-beginning to like Steve Buscemi a lot. Tarentino known for violence, but also gifted director (supposedly) and Dogs made him famous. Try it again. Which denomination?
